We all have secrets – even nurses, the most trusted of all professions.1 So what kind of secrets or confessions can a nurse have throughout her career? Well, I can’t speak for all of us, so I’ll speak for the nurse I know best – me.
- I’ve lived, worked as a nurse without health insurance. My family hit a rough time, and as much as I knew I (and my entire family) needed it, I couldn’t afford the monthly health insurance costs. And as happens with the majority of people without insurance, I (and my entire family) went without preventive care for at least two years. We took the risk. Thankfully, my family is quite healthy, but I do know the scary reality of being sick or having sick family members without the “safety” of health insurance. If you’ve never lived this, then you don’t really know the myriad emotions and complex distress this causes. That experience changed my perceptions of the uninsured because I was one.
