What Does It Take to Create an Empowered Nursing Team?

Many organizations tout the fact that they have an enlightened organization and their nursing team is empowered. Yet many nurses in some of these organizations do not feel that same energy. Perhaps the term empowerment is overused. Or more likely, leaders may not have a grasp of what empowerment really is. They don’t know what needs to be present in order for the workforce to feel that they have power over their practice.

In other words, it is not magic! Simply saying “Poof, you’re empowered!” does not create an enlightened staff. It takes hard work, commitment and clarity on the part of knowledgeable nurse leaders to create the infrastructure for an empowered workforce.
